Shingle, tile or metal for a Tampa roof?

All three can be the right answer. It depends on the house, the budget and how long you plan to stay.

Florida Product Approval

Whatever you choose, it must carry a Florida Product Approval, which shows it has been tested and approved for use under the Florida Building Code. The approval also sets how it must be installed: nail pattern, adhesive, clips. Ask any roofer which approval the product carries and how they install to it.

Wind-rated and impact-resistant shingles

Higher-grade shingles are made to resist uplift in strong wind and to take impacts better. They cost more than basic shingles, but in a hurricane-exposed county they are often worth it. Check with your insurer whether they offer any credit for them.

Common questions

Can I switch from shingle to tile?

Often, but tile is much heavier. The roof framing may need an engineering check first.

Which roof lasts longest here?

Properly installed standing-seam metal and well-maintained tile usually outlast shingles in the Florida sun.

Storm passed over? Have the roof looked at before the next one.
